SANDRA
MONFORT

The traditional and the avant-garde. The ancestral and the modern. The organic and the digital. Poetry and song. Sandra Monfort’s career is forged on this accumulation of dualities. She is a versatile artist, but also very solid. Someone who knows how to combine technique with intuition. Her debut album, ‘Niño Reptil Ángel’ (Hidden Track, 2021), was a meeting point between lyricism, traditional folk songs, and electronic beats. One of the most fascinating albums in the Spanish pop music scene during that year. This was acknowledged by the Carles Santos Awards, honoring her solo project with the Best New Artist and Best Album of 2021 awards. She also gifted us with two new singles in 2022, ‘Flordemavida’ and ‘Estrany triangle amorós’ (a tender, dark, and melodic version of the well-known ‘Bizarre Love Triangle’ by New Order).

This 2023 comes strong with her eagerly awaited second album titled ‘La Mona’ (Hidden Track, 2023). It offers a resolute sonic evolution that reaffirms her transformative ability. An exploration of the territory where folk music and 80s pop converge. An exercise in synchronized swimming between electronica and popular culture. With arrangements from a Valencian band, percussion, 80s synthesizers, powerful guitars, and her tender and confident voice, she weaves her songs to create a unique and poetic universe filled with dance. The Valencian artist sings in her mother tongue with a very real and everyday tone that makes it impossible not to be transported to a space filled with life and the collective spirit of the Valencian people, their streets, their festivals, their desires, their laments… She presents pasodobles, bachatas, boleros, ballads, and other folk genres that are sung in her mother tongue for the first time and are reinforced with avant-garde elements. She touches on sensitive topics such as suicide, motherhood, patriarchy, love, sex, death, and male violence, all from a bright and hopeful perspective. The creator that contemporary society needs to awaken, to not give up entirely, to mobilize and sensitize, to unite and collectivize. A breath of fresh air, a healing dance, a deep sigh.
